Coláiste Lorcáin came to existence in July 1984 as a result of an amalgamation between the Vocational School and St. Mary’s Secondary School, Castledermot. The school is dedicated to St. Laurence O’Toole, the patron saint of the Archdiocese of Dublin, who was born in the parish of Castledermot around the year 1123.
Coláiste Lorcáin is a co-educational school as the schools believes that co-education is the most natural form of education and that it has distinct advantages for boys and girls alike. Being co-educational allows the school to offer a much broader range of subjects and these are on offer to both girls and boys on an equal footing. Thus, the principle of gender equity is upheld in the school. Boys may take subjects such as Home Economics, Music and Art, Craft and Design. Likewise girls may choose subjects like Technology, Technical Graphics and Materials Technology Wood. Such choices allow for the development of a broader range of skills suited to each individual as well as opening up a wide range of career opportunities.
